Song Review: WURST Boldly Emerges from Conchita's Flames on "Hit Me" Single

As the gorgeous bearded drag queen who mesmerized the world and exited the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 victorious with "Rise Like a Phoenix", singer-songwriter Conchita Wurst has capitalized on the fame and success with the subsequent release of two number-one albums in her home country of Austria.

Following her self-titled debut, featuring shoulda-been-singles "Up For Air" and "Somebody to Love", and full-length collaboration with the Vienna Symphony, From Vienna with Love, the global entertainer now splits his persona in two for the next music venture.

Presenting now as WURST, and following the recent release of "Trash All the Glam", the electronica artist shares "Hit Me", a reckoning with his past as a soft, vulnerable vocal performance contrasts with lyrics of unwavering strength and fortitude. The new single is the second pulled from WURST's upcoming album Truth Over Magnitude, out later this year.

Though the energetic dance track progresses with a carefree vibe and unbreakable sense of will on the surface, "Hit Me" actually highlights threats pointed directly at him. WURST recently coming out as HIV positive to thwart a potential blackmail scheme puts heavier emotional weight on the songwriting. Instead of cowering and running away from the challenge though, the artist informs listeners the attacks will not harm him and determination will always prevail.

"I am me, you are you, I know my vice, so do you, I gave you my heart, it's in two, inside and outside, I'm bruised," he sings on the endearing yet foolishly unguarded hook, setting up a story of betrayal by someone close to his heart. It's with the betrayal fresh in his mind that WURST refuses to allow the attacker to feel any sort of redemption or victory for the pain or grieve they may have caused. WURST is fighting back.

Through a shocking transformation and reinvention, WURST is now sharing music "far more personal" than anything created under his previous persona. "Hit Me" emphasizes that the artist remains in control of his own life, refusing to let an opponent win, especially not when the attack is enveloped in cowardly actions and broken trust.

Just like the runway-perfect supporting production, the song is ultimately about picking one's self up and taking the next step forward.
