There once was a time when we thought we'd never get a third solo album from No Doubt frontwoman and "Hollaback Girl" songstress Gwen Stefani. But after a decade-long wait, the anticipated project will finally hit shelves next month on March 18.
In 2014, the artist returned with reggae-influenced "Baby Don't Lie" and hot mess "Spark The Fire". The lukewarm reception to those singles caused Stefani to scrap an entire album of material, and start over again from the heart. The emotional and convincing heartbreaker "Used To Love You" followed and it seemed the artist was back on the right track. Now, we get This Is What the Truth Feels Like's official second single, the retro-pop "Make Me Like You".
The new, refreshing, endearing single is a vast departure from its somber predecessor, it terms of sound and premise. While Stefani was regretting a relationship previously, she seems to be embracing the idea of love this time around, jumping in head first on "Make Me Like You", but not without her reservations. With roots in the pop, disco and rock genres, the track transports listeners back to a carefree time of unconditional love and reckless behavior.
While "Used To Love You" was inspired by Stefani's now-defunct marriage with Gavin Rossdale, it appears the singer has found happiness again in fellow The Voice coach Blake Shelton, the lyrics have his touch written all over them. "I was fine before I met you, I was broken but fine, I was lost and uncertain, but my heart was still mine," Stefani sings before a groovy, guitar-driven beat guides effortlessly towards an infectious, radio-ready chorus of having to deal with the feelings of missing a loved one.
Alongside the production team that crafted pop gems for the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen ("Run Away With Me"), Adam Lambert ("The Original High") and Selena Gomez (Hands To Myself"), as well as her thriving songwriting partners Justin Tratner and Julia Michaels, Stefani has found a bubbly pop sound that is successfully reminiscent of her past solo and band work, but slightly pushing it towards the way things are moving on the radio airwaves in 2016. "Make You Like Me" is a relatable piece of mellow pop that should become a future hit.
With a new album on the horizon, thanks God!, the release of the official, stunning cover art and plans for the world's first live music video to be aired during the GRAMMYs, it seems all steps are in motion for proper album promotion. "Make Me Like You" is unmistakably a Stefani creation. The production style borders on quirky, but the sentiment and honesty is intact, creating a fun jam that should put her back on top where she belongs.
